Individual Health Insurance
Individual insurance is available in a vast array of designs, from fully featured copay plans, to major medical/catastrophic coverage plans. You can also get Health Savings Account qualified plans for individuals.
As a general rule, if you are not a smoker and have no extenuating medical history issues, individual insurance will be about one half the cost of small group insurance.
Individual insurance can be written on an individual, a couple, or an entire family. In fact, an individual plan can be written on children only, or a spouse plus dependents, as might be an option when an adult has group coverage through their employer, but the cost of covering the dependents on the same group policy is beyond the reach of the employee's budget.
Why is individual insurance different from group insurance?
When medically underwriting an individual application, the insurance carrier has three options:
- issue the policy as applied for;
- decline the application;
- issue the policy with conditions
Not all carriers deal with the last option the same way: some only accept or decline; some will rate up premiums for various medical conditions, and some will exclude medical conditions from coverage. One of our most important services to you is to pre-screen your application for the most advantageous coverage and outcome.
